Why willpower-based habit advice doesn't work for ADHD brains
[Replace with a hero image for this article]
Every habit book says the same thing: decide, commit, repeat. For years I thought I was failing at that formula. I wasn’t — the formula was built for a different kind of brain.
ADHD brains don’t get a steady reward from repetition the way the habit books assume. Discipline alone can’t out-argue a system that isn’t wired for delayed rewards. So instead of trying harder, I changed what I was relying on.
Three things replaced willpower for me: environment design (make the right action the easiest one), external triggers (a calendar, not a memory), and novelty (rotating how I do a task so it doesn’t go stale). None of this is a cure. Some days still don’t work. But most days do, and that’s the actual bar.
If you’ve been told you just need more discipline, I’d gently push back. You probably need a different system, not a stronger will.
