Executive function isn’t about willpower.

The neuroscience behind task initiation, decision fatigue, and why your brain needs different support.

For most of my career, I assumed that if I wanted something badly enough, I’d be able to make myself start it. That assumption cost me years of unnecessary guilt over tasks I knew were important and still could not make myself begin.

Executive function is the set of mental processes that let you plan, initiate, and follow through on tasks. In ADHD brains, this system doesn’t run at the same baseline capacity—the mechanism that turns intention into action is less reliable and gets exhausted faster than people assume.

The fix that worked for my business was reducing the number of decisions required to start anything: fixed time slots with a fixed first step written down in advance, templates instead of deciding from nothing, and automating or delegating anything that can be removed from my decision load entirely.

Willpower was never the missing ingredient. A system that doesn’t require willpower in the first place is.
